The Brief

1 William Street is a major commercial tower in the Brisbane CBD. The brief was to fabricate a lightweight, durable housing for a Barrisol architectural lighting installation - a premium system using LED back lighting through a Barrisol stretched-membrane surface to produce a continuous, illuminated panel. The finished installation reads as a glowing wall or skylight, with the lighting and the membrane carried by the housing behind it. The housing had to be light enough not to load the structure unnecessarily, durable enough to hold the system in place over the long term, and accurate enough to deliver the architectural finish the design called for.

Our Approach

The job started with the client's engineering and drawings. Our team worked through the supplied documentation to confirm that the design would translate to fabrication as intended - aligning the geometry, fixings, and tolerances with what our lasers, press brakes, and welding bays could deliver, and resolving any details before any material was cut.

From there, fabrication ran in-house at Banyo. Laser cutting on the housing components, press brake folding to form the panels and frames, and assembly to bring the housing together as a single, lightweight structure ready to carry the Barrisol membrane and LED system.

Powder coating finished the job. The colour and finish were specified to sit within the architectural vision for the space, so the housing reads as part of the finished surface rather than as exposed structure.
